We recently took in a stray kitten (Pigpen), and he absolutely destroyed his poor nose against the mesh carrier on his way to be neutered. So, we tried a backpack that had a plastic bubble window when he needed to go to urgent care—that was even worse. We ended up with blood EVERYWHERE.
I needed another solution. I was skeptical that this would work, but also desperate. We have three resident catswhose tolerance for the carrier varies, so I hoped at least one of them would like this carrier.
First of all, all three were quite happy to be bagged up and carried for a test drive. The medium size easily fit our 9, 10, and 13 pound kiddos, all with very small frames. I was also happy to see the handle did not pull in the fabric around the collar, so there was no danger of choking.
But the real test came with Pigpen. He’s only 6 months and 9 pounds, but is already bigger than our adult cats.
I had to take him to the emergency vet, and while he wasn’t psyched to get into the bag at first, he significantly calmed down in the car. The bag also helped the vet get his vitals and perform an examination—otherwise, they said, they would have needed to sedate him because he was so scared.
I let him out of the bag while we waited, but when I offered it as an option, he literally dove into it, put his head through the collar, tucked his tail and feet in, and clearly felt much safer.
Pictured: Pigpen with his very scabbed nose from the previous 2 carriers, then finally resting with room to spare.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I just have to buy three more 😅 maybe after the vet bills are paid off…
